Letter, 1863 August 22.

The collection consists of a six-page letter by Nathan Hiatt to his father Eli on 22 August 1863. He wrote the letter from a hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. Nathan voices his homesickness and desire to see his father and the family farm again. He also indicates that the Confederate army now controls eatern Tennessee, and states that he hopes to help change that soon.

Nathan Hiatt was born on 18 September 1843. He grew up in Farmland, Indiana in Randolph County. Nathan's father was strongly against slavery, working in anti-slavery societies and taking in fugitive slaves on one occasion. Nathan joined the Indiana 84th Infantry on 2 August 1862. On 20 September 1863, about one month after the letter in this collection was written, he was killed at Chickamauga, Georgia. From the description of Letter, 1863 August 22.
